Monday Anagrams – What’s your Awareness. . .

 Although we lost an hour Early yesterday morning, we made it through the day this Monday.  Throughout our career path, we lose time, appointments, colleagues and friends and an occasional discussion.    It happens that we grow, develop and become more aware of who we are and how we interact with others.    Since I traveled to New York City on business, twice this month, I wanted to share with you a few anagrams I wrote, as follows:

 E arnestly the Speakers engaged

T he audience to

H ear how their journeys gave them strength to change.

I t never fails to reach the

C onsciousness of each person’s awareness.

E arly on it became clear

T hat a Speaker told the truth.

H e said, “What was for many of us, was not in our future.”

I t was necessary to Pivot in order to 

C hange our chosen path.  Be guided by your integrity

 E verything outside of the vehicle was very still.  After

T he quick glance out his window, the driver

H eard no voices or sounds on the street or parkway.  He

I nstantly and 

C asually drove slower at 1:30am.

 E ver so softly people moved

T hrough the 9/11 Museum this Sunday morning.

H ow it affected people was

I nterrupted by watching

C arefully placed videos.  We were reminded to

What’s Your Popularity Choice?

What’s YOUR Choice for Popularity?

Associate Supreme Court Justice Stewart Potter is known for choosing to include an American colloquial phrase in one of his Opinions; namely, “I’ll know it when I see it.” Although Justice Potter used that phrase to define pornography, many of us also use our visual sense in deciding moral ethical issues. It’s generational, isn’t it?   We’ve moved from, ” A picture is worth a thousand words,” to “Selfie, anyone!”

Three Researchers, two from Oxford University, Jim A.C.Everett, Phd Candidate and Molly Crockett, Associate Professor of Experimental Psychology and David Pizarro, Associate Professor Department of Psychology from Cornell University, created an ethical scenario to understand whether a decision based on Popularity had any influence on its choice. The creativity of adding a choice of Popularity to well-established interpretations of ethics allows for inclusion of present-day understanding of morality. The scenario is:

“Imagine that an out of control trolley is speeding

towards a group of five people. You are standing

on a footbridge above, next to a large man. If

you push him off the bridge onto the track below,

his body, will stop the trolley before it hits the

five people. He will die, but the five others

will be saved. Should you push the man off the

bridge.”

The Researchers also added a twist to their “trolley problem” as they asked a question: how would you trust a social partner, based on their answer to the trolly scenario. “Weekend Thoughts — Taming the Judgment

A few months ago, I finished reading a book by Margaret J. Wheatley: Turning to one another. Simple Conversations to restore hope in the future (2009). Ms. Wheatley follows the principle of Occam’s Razor – the simplest answer appears to be the right answer. What’s the simplest task we all share – communicating. “It’s not the differences that divide us. It’s our judgments about each other that do.” If we think about the last time we may have rolled our eyes or became quiet while listening to someone, what judgment did we have that caused the rolling of the eyes or the quietness. How did that emotion (underlying judgment) stop a positive conversation from beginning or continuing?

Let’s face it. We sometimes are not at our best in handling a situation. I may be biased because I like Chicago Pizza more than New York or California Pizza. Yet, I can appreciate and learn the uniqueness of each presentation of Pizza and the different ingredients. Once we recognize the bias for what it is, it helps to tame the judgment directing our actions, to allow anopen conversation to understand another’s perspective. Mr. Wheatley’s Turning to One Another is an enlightening process of understanding ourselves more than we might initially realize.

As you Choose Who You Want to be Known As, when a recent conversation didn’t go as well as you may have wanted, consider what you wanted to have happen. Was there an underlying judgment you may have had about the subject matter, or how the other person spoke or presented his viewpoint? An unconscious judgment can be tamed, once we identify it. The issue becomes, do you want to? How will it help you as you manage your career? ”

Tolerance. . .

People seem to act on beliefs that do not seem wholesome. When a sale may be imminent and your intuition has been urging you to go the other way, take a moment and choose to be compliant.   Speak up is the new mantra so we don’t find ourselves saying,  “I wish I hadn’t done that.” I  wish I had known what I know now.”   “What was I thinking.”

Our first reaction is often, judgment, after learning unsettling facts. It’s very hard to sit back and wait for the truth to be known. We feel an emotion so strong that our anchored initial judgment will not allow us to hear, let alone listen, to facts that answer our questions. The anchored initial judgment will not allow the pain to be diffused easily. Humanity hurts and our level of patience and understanding seems to have reached a level close to exhaustion because the unsettling reality is so painful. When the Challenger Space Shuttle blew-up before our eyes on television, people said enough, take it off the media. http://www.history.com/topics/challenger-disaster. The deaths we have witnessed recently across the United States in the past few weeks is enabling many people to also say, enough. Tolerance is a basic American value, both at the workplace and our community.

We are living and working in a new era.  Our responsibility lies within us to follow the advice of our Leaders to maintain the common good for all of us.  Peace.

“Talk to Inform” – Your Storyboard

0511-1204-0312-1815_Woman_giving_a_presentation_at_a_lectern_clipart_imageBING080615 As is often the case when you are looking for something, you come across another idea.  Here is an idea that may be of interest to you when you want to create a storyboard for your next writing, presentation, or meeting at the office.  It’s called, “Talk to Inform – Visual Aid Mate.”   [I am not the author and unfortunately, this color visual  aid shows no company name or copyright information.]

It consists of 10 boxes printed on legal size paper, landscape print setting.  Talking to Inform not only requires a Subject, but the Importance of the Benefit to your audience as well as an Outline of how you are going spend the audience’s valuable time during your Talk on the Subject. [Boxes 1 through 3]

Boxes 4 through 8 contain the Body of the Talk that may contain your personal experiences, expert opinions, analogies, statistics, facts and examples of how your Subject Matter relates to the audience.  Boxes 9 and 10 represent how you Recap and Confirm the Benefit to the audience.  So completing these 10 boxes and you’re done!

We all look for ways to streamline our work flow and I hope this brief idea is helpful to you when you need a self-management tool.    Have a great week in your career!

REACHING and HOLIDAY GRAB BAGS…

Is a Grab Bag a REACH?

We’ve all experienced being a member of a holiday grab bag at the office.  Often times we opened a package and received what we wanted; othertimes, we did not.   Personally, I like to be surprised because the grab bag is really a sharing event:

*  Price is limited –

*  Ingenuity comes into play –

*  Shopping time to research where to find the item –

*  We allow someone else into our lives to learn about us –

*  We learn a bit about the other person –

*  Our unconscious bias tugs at us if we are disappointed how our request was interpreted –

*  We may have lost sight about what the grab bag was really all about; and

*  The culture of your team or department may also strongly influence whether grab bags are even permitted at the office. 

Engagement and appreciation is what everyone strives for in an office. This time of year offers options and opportunities for creativity if your office grab bag has lost its luster or meaning.   Even if grab bags don’t happen at your place of work, there is a cultural office tradition during this holiday season Since every employee benefits by at least one day off for during this holiday season we share equally in the culture of the holiday. 

What can you do to reach out to someone to include them in your office culture tradition?  How open are you to understand why it may be important for another employee not to participate in the office tradition?   What form of engagement or appreciation are you expecting during this holiday season?

As You Choose Who You Want to be Known As during this holiday season, consider reaching out to understand – to engage – to appreciate someone else at the office and it will come back to you, when you least expect it.
